A woman has died in a horror crash which tore her car apart and left debris strewn across a highway in Melbourne’s south-east.

Police said the BMW sedan slammed into a pole on the Nepean Highway, at Cheltenham, near Southland shopping centre, shortly after 5:00am.

The woman, who was believed to be the only occupant of the car, died at the scene and was yet to be formally identified.

The highway was closed in both directions near the intersection of Bay Road as police investigated.

Some lanes have since reopened, but traffic management is in place while the pole is reinstated.

Teenager fighting for life after car collides with train

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy is in a critical condition after a train hit a car at a level crossing at Bairnsdale in Victoria’s east last night.

The boy, who was a passenger in the car, was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with injuries to his head, chest and pelvis after the crash at a crossing in Ligar Street about 6:30pm.

The 19-year-old female driver of the car was also taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The pair were trapped in the car for some time before being cut free by emergency services, police said.

Police said none of the 38 passengers on the Traralgon-bound train were injured in the collision.

The crossing did not have a boom gate, but did have warning lights, police said.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
