Need 34 non-stop hours to complete your Christmas shopping?
You may just be in luck.
Shopping centres are opening earlier and closing later across Queensland as Christmas approaches.
This is what you need to know about shopping during the silly season:
Are the shops open longer between now and Christmas Eve?
They sure are.
Large retailers including department stores are allowed to trade up until midnight every night from now until Sunday, December 23.
In Brisbane, Westfield shopping centre Chermside will stay open from 8am Sunday all the way through to 6pm on Christmas Eve — that’s 34 hours to get your shopping done. No excuses!
Garden City will trade until midnight on Sunday, then from 6am to 6pm on Christmas Eve.

They’ll all be shut on Christmas Day.
All Coles stores will be open Boxing Day and New Year’s Day except Ayr, Goondiwindi, and Mount Isa.
All Woolworths stores will be open on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day with the exception of:

I forgot something during the food shop before Christmas. What can I do?
Never fear, your local independent grocer is here.
Independent shops which predominantly sell food/groceries are allowed to open on December 25.
As mentioned above, Woolworths and Coles will be closed on the day.
Can I fill up the car on Christmas Day?
Like the local corner store, service stations have unrestricted trading hours and can open on Christmas Day.
Can I sneak away to the movies on Christmas Day?
Yes, but it depends where you live.
Event Cinemas are open Christmas Day from 3:00pm but only at Chermside, Pacific Fair, and Garden City.
They’ll be screening Boxing Day releases Aquaman, Holmes & Watson, and Ralph Breaks the Internet a day early.

Cineplex Cinema in South Bank will also have screenings on Christmas Day.

Can I enjoy a drink at a hotel, bar or pub on Christmas Day?
If they’re open for business yes you can, but restrictions apply.
Licensed premises will be able allowed to sell and supply alcohol between 10:00am and midnight in conjunction with a meal.
We’re talking a proper sit down meal here. The law states a ‘meal’ is defined as food eaten by a person at a fixed structure used as a table, with cutlery provided for the purpose of eating the food, and is of a sufficient substance to be ordinarily accepted as a meal.
You’ll be able to buy alcohol for one hour before eating your meal, while eating your meal, and for one hour after finishing your meal.

Also, licensees with accommodation may serve alcohol to patrons eating a meal in the dining area of the premises between 10:00am and 12 midnight.
This means that alcohol may be served to patrons for one hour before dining, during the course of a meal and for one hour after the meal is finished.
Everything will return to normal on Boxing Day.
On Christmas Eve, the sale and supply of alcohol must finish at 12 midnight regardless of whether the venue has approved extended trading hours.
It means you must finish drinks and leave the premises by 12:30am on Christmas Day.
All gaming machines must stop at 12 midnight on Christmas Eve and may not start again before 10:00am on Boxing Day.
Adult entertainment is also prohibited from 12 midnight on Christmas Eve and throughout Christmas Day.
What’s the earliest I can start my Boxing Day shopping/return gifts I don’t want?
Get ready to burst through the front door of your favourite department store from 9:00am Wednesday.
Shops are allowed to stay open until 6:00pm that day. You can continue your shopping spree/return run from 7:00am on Thursday, December 27.
These times vary slightly for defined tourists areas.
The Myer Centre in the Brisbane CBD will be open from 9:00am to 6:00pm.
What’s the latest I can hang around the pub on New Year’s Eve?
All licenced premises are permitted to sell or supply liquor until 2:00am on New Year’s Day.
This means that the bar must finish serving at 2:00am, unless the premises is currently approved to trade beyond 2:00am.
Without approved post-2:00am trading, patrons must finish drinks and leave the premises by 2:30am.
However, licensees may have applied to continue trading past 2:00am. You’ll have to check with the individual venue.
Are theme parks on the Gold Coast open on Christmas Day?
Christmas Day is one of only two days of the year they’re closed for business (the other being Anzac Day).
Dreamworld/Whitewater World, Movie World, Sea World and Wet’N’Wild are all open every other day of the holidays.
Some will have extended opening hours between December 27 and early January – but you’ll have to check their websites for more details.
