A man charged over the murder of a woman at Murray Bridge earlier this year has today pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

The body of 54-year-old mother-of-three Sally Rothe was found in a home at Murray Bridge in February.

After an extensive police search spanning several days, Travis Kirchner was arrested at a home at Doveton in Melbourne’s south-east in February and charged with her murder.

His capture followed an extensive police search of more than 100 properties in Murray Bridge and other places earlier this year.

During the manhunt in February, South Australian police described Kirchner as “very dangerous and unstable”.

Two South Australian detectives successfully applied to extradite Kirchner during a hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in February.

Kirchner will appear in court again in October.

Ms Rothe’s daughter-in-law, Taigen Murphy-Philby, said her family was relieved by Kirchner’s guilty plea.

“When it first happened it completely destroyed all of us,” she said.

“[My partner’s] mum was his rock, and anybody that loses their mum is going to feel upset, but the way he lost her is a tragedy.

“There won’t be a trial, which is a good thing — he’s where he deserves to be now.

“Obviously, the quicker it’s done and over with, the better it is for us because we can’t really move on or do anything.”

Ms Murphy-Philby described Ms Rothe as a generous and “down-to-earth” person who would offer help to anyone in need.

“Almost weekly, there was someone here [at her home] asking for her help, and she would always help,” Ms Murphy-Philby said.

“If they didn’t have any money, she would give them her last $20.”
