An American mother’s attempt to use her son in support of the #HimToo counter-campaign has not quite gone to plan, with it firstly shot down by her own sons and then lampooned by the rest of the world.

Brandishing the hashtag #HimToo — which has become more prominent in recent weeks as Brett Kavanaugh has sought to overcome allegations of sexual assault to seal a place on the Supreme Court — the mother said her Navy son had become so scared of false accusations from women, he had forgone dating altogether.

The tweet, and account, has since been deleted.

Originally posted on Saturday, the tweet started to gain traction early this week.

But even while it was still making waves online, some Twitter mythbusting had begun to take place from within the family.

Jon Hanson, brother to the Navy man in question Pieter, managed to find the humour in the situation, confirming that his mum “made it up”.

Jon said his brother was a little upset at becoming an unsuspecting viral sensation at first, but the man himself soon moved to set the record straight.

And while the Hanson family had inadvertently become online celebrities, the rest of the internet had well and truly moved on to putting its own spin on the whole episode.
