Sydney Opal Tower apartment building evacuated after reports of ‘cracking noises’
About 100 residents of the 30-storey Opal Tower apartment building at Sydney Olympic Park has been evacuated after reports of “cracking noises” from residents and passers-by.
An emergency operation is underway and police have closed the nearby train station and several roads. The alarm was raised about 2:45pm.
Residents told police they heard cracking noises throughout the morning and emergency services are now testing the structural integrity of the building.
NSW Fire and Rescue said it had specialist equipment at the scene to monitor any movement.
