Comedian Samantha Bee has apologised to Ivanka Trump and her viewers for using an expletive to describe US President Donald Trump’s daughter.
While discussing Mr Trump’s immigration policies on her TBS show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, she called Ivanka Trump “feckless” followed by the vulgar expletive, and urged her to talk to her father about policies that separate children from their parents.
It followed social media outrage in the US over reports 1,500 children who entered the United States unaccompanied were “lost in the system”. A US Health and Human Services official denied the children were lost.
Bee said her comments were prompted by an Ivanka Trump tweet showing her smiling and holding her son.
She said the tweet was “insensitive” and urged Ivanka to tell her father to “do something about the immigration practices”.
Bee has since issued a statement saying her language was “inappropriate and inexcusable” and that she crossed a line and deeply regretted it.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the language was vile and vicious and called on network management to demonstrate that it would not be condoned.
TBS said Bee had taken the right step in apologising.
The network said “it was our mistake, too”, but did not mention if there would be any consequences for Bee or the show.
