Popular former ABC broadcaster Russell Woolf will return to ABC Radio Perth as part of a refreshed 2019 line-up.

He will be joined by Nadia Mitsopoulos to present the Breakfast program from 6:00am to 10:00am on weekdays from January 21.

Woolf previously hosted ABC Radio Perth Drive as well as presented nightly TV weather bulletins before he moved to Minneapolis in 2015.

“I am so excited to be home, to be back on ABC Radio Perth and to be presenting a show that has been such an important part of my own broadcasting experience,” he said.

“Then to be able to do it with one of my great mates — to be honest, I’m still pinching myself.”

Three new voices on Perth airwaves

State political reporter Jessica Strutt will take over as presenter of the current affairs program Focus at 10:00am on weekdays.

The long-time host of WA Regional Drive, Barry Nicholls, will present a live statewide Early Mornings program from 4:00am to 6:00am.

An extended Afternoons program will be hosted by Gillian O’Shaughnessy between 12:30pm and 4:00pm, while Geoff Hutchison will continue to present Drive between 4:00pm and 6:30pm.

Former ABC Great Southern presenter Christine Layton will next year present Saturday Breakfast, which includes popular gardening talkback segment Roots And Shoots with Sabrina Hahn.

ABC Radio Perth manager Sarah Knight said she was excited about the new 2019 line-up.

“It will be a year of must-listen radio,” she said.

“We’re introducing three new voices to Perth radio and bringing back one much-loved voice to the airwaves in a new expanded line-up — I can’t wait.”

The changes follow the departure of Breakfast presenters Paula Kruger and Peter Bell.

Kruger will present the Afternoons program on ABC Radio Canberra next year, while Bell resigned from the ABC in September to take up a managerial role with the Fremantle Dockers.

More local content for regional WA

ABC Radio listeners in regional areas will be able to tune in to O’Shaughnessy’s Afternoons program from 1:30pm, replacing Myf Warhurst’s national program that will no longer be broadcast in WA.

Clare Negus, the ABC’s acting regional editor for WA, said the move reflected feedback from many regional listeners who wanted to hear a West Australian voice during the afternoon.

“It was clear the regional audience wanted to be part of a statewide conversation, broadcast live from WA, during that time of the day,” she said.

ABC Great Southern Breakfast presenter Andrew Collins will present the WA Regional Drive program from January 7.

“Andrew has become a beloved companion for Great Southern audiences during the past seven years and it’s great that the rest of WA will get to know him better on the Regional Drive program,” Negus said.
