TOUTED as an The Everest contender earlier in the year, but failing to win a slot in today’s big race, Pierata at least gave connections something to smile about with victory in the Sydney Stakes.
The Greg Hickman-trained stallion showed he might have deserved a slot after all when he churned through the heavy conditions to blitz his rivals in the $500,000 Group 3 sprint.
He left Jungle Edge, a noted wet-tracker in his wake. Jungle Edge hung on for second with Clearly Innocent in third. Jockey Tommy Berry had Pierata positioned perfcetly in the run before luanching his bid for victory over the famous randwick rise.
Nothing could go with the classy four-year-old, who is likely to head to Melbourne to continue his spring campaign. In Her Time won the same race last year and she was among the main contenders for The Everest on saturday.
Pierata’s stunning win could lock in and Everest slot for him next year.
