A man has drowned at Paynesville in Victoria’s east this afternoon.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the 45-year-old man from Bairnsdale was swimming with his wife and family in waters off Sunset Drive at about 4:30pm.

At around 4:50pm people noticed he was in difficulty and he was pulled from the water, the police spokesman said.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The man’s death follows seven drownings in Victorian waters in December.

On the weekend, Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp urged the public to remain vigilant around water, following the state’s fifth drowning in less than a week.

On Saturday, a 34-year-old woman drowned while attempting to save her child, who was swimming in Lake Victoria near Bairnsdale.

More to come.
