A man has drowned after falling into a rock pool at a waterfall in Victoria’s Grampians National Park.

The 27-year-old New Zealand man fell into the pool at MacKenzie Falls around 5:00pm yesterday, police said.

A witness tried to rescue the man, but was unable to reach him.

His body was recovered by emergency crews just before 1:00am.

It is the fourth drowning in Victoria in just three days, after three men died at beaches south-east of Melbourne over Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, a father and son drowned in dangerous surf of Cape Woolamai, on Phillip Island.

The following evening, an abalone diver drowned at Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula.

Those deaths prompted Premier Daniel Andrews to urge swimmers to “be smart”.

“This weather is beautiful, but it just shouldn’t end in tragedy,” he said.

“If you’re not swimming at a supervised beach, then you are taking all sorts of risks.”
