A 31-vehicle pile-up on an expressway has killed 14 people and injured 34 others in China’s north-west Gansu province.

According to information released by the accident handling command, the accident happened on Saturday night (local time) after a heavy truck lost control and crashed into a line of vehicles waiting at a toll gate in Gansu’s capital, Lanzhou.

The local traffic police sent more than 260 officers to the accident site to control traffic, rescue the injured and give first-aid treatment.

All the injured were sent to a hospital and the injured truck driver was put under investigation.

Last week, 15 people were killed after a bus plunged off a high bridge into China’s Yangtze River in the western city of Chongqing.

An eight-second surveillance video of the Yangtze River accident was released by police, showing the driver and a passenger arguing and grappling with each other in the moments before the bus suddenly veered across oncoming traffic and off the bridge.
