Northern Territory Police are responding to a disturbance at Darwin’s Don Dale youth detention centre.
The facility has been surrounded by emergency crews, including ambulance officers and firefighters, who were called out to the incident just before 7:00pm.
A number of detainees have been seen on the roof and smoke is visible at the entry of the centre.
A spokesperson for Territory Families confirmed authorities were on the scene and are helping to resolve the situation, but gave no more information.
At the scene, shouting could be heard over the constant ringing of alarms.
An announcement being broadcast across the facility warned detainees: “This is the police. Drop your weapons. Your actions are being monitored. There will be consequences. Stop putting yourself and others at risk. Surrender yourself to the police.”
The incident comes after a two-and-a-half-hour stand-off on Sunday when two teenage detainees scaled the roof of the facility.
More to come.
