Police have arrested a registered sex offender and convicted rapist who had been on the loose in Melbourne’s bayside suburbs for several weeks.
Joel Pregnell, 37, was arrested in a car park on Redholme Street in Moorabbin about 6:00pm.
Police last week appealed for public help to locate Pregnell, who drove at an officer who was trying to arrest him in Black Rock in Melbourne’s south on January 24 when he was discovered driving a stolen car.
Pregnell was convicted in 2007 of serious sex offences, including the rape of a 16-year-old, and on his release from prison was put on the sex offender register for 15 years.
He was interviewed on January 11 as part of his release conditions and gave false information about where he was living, in violation of his reporting obligations.
He had been spotted in Hampton last week and was also known to frequent the St Kilda, Frankston, Bayside and Mornington Peninsula areas.
Police described him as dangerous with an extensive criminal history including violent offences, dishonesty and traffic offences.
Police thanked the public for their assistance in locating Pregnell.
