A cyclist has died after being hit by a car, believed to have been stolen, on Chapel Street in South Yarra in Melbourne’s inner suburbs this morning.

Police said the cyclist was hit by a white Mercedes sedan after it clipped another vehicle and ran into her on Chapel Street, near Grover Street, about 10:00am.

The cyclist was treated by emergency services but she died at the scene.

Two parked cars were also hit by the Mercedes, but no-one was inside.

The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene on foot, police said.

Police said they were not aware of anyone else who had been injured.

Traffic has been blocked on Chapel Street between Ellis Street and Malvern Road and motorists are being diverted.

Police said they were still investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information on the driver has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
