A man has drowned while diving at Cape Schanck on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Key points:

  • The diver drowned about 6:30pm on Christmas Day
  • A father and son drowned at a beach about 40 kilometres away the previous evening
  • There have been 12 coastal drowning around the country so far this month

Police say the man was with a friend in waters off Cape Schanck Road last night when he got into trouble about 6:30pm.

An emergency services helicopter was required to retrieve his body from rocks.

It is the third drowning death on beaches south-east of Melbourne in just over 24 hours.

On Christmas Eve, a woman watched on as her husband and older son got into trouble while swimming at an unpatrolled surf beach near Cape Woolamai.

The older man, 45, was pulled from the water but could not be revived by paramedics.

The police airwing was called in to help locate the 20-year-old son, who was found in the water by lifesavers from Woolamai Beach Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC) and died at the scene.

The family’s youngest member, a 12-year-old boy, managed to swim to shore and was discharged from hospital yesterday.

The area is known for being dangerous, and claimed the lives of two other swimmers in the festive period a year ago.

The Woolamai Beach SLSC reissued a warning for swimmers to avoid the area.

Around the country, 12 people have drowned in the coastal waters so far this month, and the latest deaths prompted authorities to warn people to check conditions before entering the surf and to stay out of dangerous waters.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews urged swimmers to “be smart”.

“This weather is beautiful, but it just shouldn’t end in tragedy,” he said.

“If you’re not swimming at a supervised beach, then you are taking all sorts of risks.”
