A man has died after falling off rocks into the ocean at The Gap near Albany.
According to police, he was with a group of friends, believed to be students, when “something went horribly wrong”.
His body was recovered from the water.
The incident happened about 3:00pm on Thursday at the cliffs, which tower 40 metres above the sea in some areas.
There have been recent renovations at the site to build a large viewing platform, fences erected near edges and warning signs.
It is one of the most popular tourist sites for the southern historic port town of Albany.
The coast near Albany is notorious for drownings, with several fisherman swept from rocks in recent months.
However these incidents are far less frequent at The Gap.
“Clearly something has gone dreadfully wrong. Someone has fallen off the rocks, gone into the water and has sadly lost their life.” Great Southern District Police Super Intendent Dominic Wood said.
The man has not yet been identified.
