Beware of 80s nostalgia in this retro Mediterranean inspired home

Built in the 80s by Croatian migrants, this Port Lincoln home, complete with a boat house, indoor pool, private beach access and 180 degree ocean views, is as unique as they come.

Described as a “one-of-a-kind with retro vibes”, the 16 room home at 36 Lincoln Highway spans across 565sqm of living space on a large, 3702sqm oceanfront block.

The property is being offered to the market for the first time in 33 years, and vendors Sam and Kat – who are selling the property on behalf of their parents – say they had many fond memories of time spent at the treasured family home.

Their father, a Port Lincoln Tuna farmer acquired the land in the early 80s with the family moving into the finished home in 1985.

“Dad would go fishing all summer and then would knock off for six months, over winter, working on the house,” they recall.

“They built it so it would have a Mediterranean feel, so it was a great home to be at in summer and especially the pool was always well used.

“As for the rest of the house, most of the rooms were only for special occasions like wedding photos and christenings, and we only ever used two (living) rooms in the house.

“One of the other main rooms that were well used was the kitchen. Mum was an amazing cook so spent most of her time there and that space has the most outstanding views.”

Spanning across two levels, the home boasts some multiple living and entertaining spaces on the lower level, including a formal family room with a sunken lounge which connects to the circular kitchen with a large walk-in pantry, stone benchtops and wall-to-wall ocean views.

Two more informal living spaces are located to the right of the kitchen which lead through to a large indoor entertaining space with a built-in bar, a barbecue and a second kitchen.

A study, a safe, an atrium, and a rumpus with a bathroom, are also found on the ground floor.

There’s also a large indoor pool house, complete with a corner spa.

Four good-sized bedrooms, meanwhile, occupy the upper level, each with access to a private ensuite.

Outside, the property features a number of alfresco zones, as well as a double garage/boat shed with a toilet.

Selling agent Karen Lombe of Harris Real Estate says the property was unlike anything she’d seen before.

“It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind with great retro vibes and one that is hard to put a price on,” she says.

“No money was spared when they built this home – even the light fittings were handmade, specially made for the property and a lot of them are crystal.

“So even though it was built in the 80s, the home was very much ahead of its time.”

Due to the property’s unique design and location, Ms Lombe says she was selling the home without a price guide and is instead letting the market decide.

She says expressions of interest was sought by Tuesday, January 22 at noon.

“It does need a bit of a renovation but it’s one that could be easily done. It’s been well kept,” Ms Lombe says.

“So if you have a family who loves to entertain, this is the home for you.”
